How To Choose A Workout Towel

How To Choose A Workout Towel - Austin gym member

There are approximately 30,500 gyms in the USA, and according to Statistic Brain Research Institute (August 30, 2017). Austin, Texas is #7 for “most notable cities for gym spending.

Never mind that 67 percent of people with gym memberships never use them. Gym memberships are growing and showing no signs of slowing down. The annual gym and health club industry revenue is an astounding 21.8 BILLION dollar industry!

Gym Stats

Gym membership owners on average will go to the gym twice each week. That means there are a lot of towels. My goal is to help you choose the right workout towel.

Using a workout towel is an essential part of proper gym etiquette. You don’t want to use gym equipment that has sweat and germs. Make sure your gym provides quality gym towels and antibacterial spray bottles for your use, or you are likely to be in an environment where bacteria and germs feast and grow.

The Characteristics of a Good Workout Towel

Most gyms provide cotton towels, and for a good reason. Cotton fibers are absorbent and dry very quickly. However, there are other better and in some cases more expensive options such as microfiber, bamboo, and linen.

Let’s face it if your gym towel does not absorb lots of sweat it’s not going to be effective. Good workout towels will keep you dry during your workout. The rule of thumb is the more loops in your workout towel, the better the absorbancy.

Size and Weight

Heavier towels last longer than towels that are thinner and weigh less. Size is a preference, but if you workout hard and longer than 20 minutes you will want a towel that you can easily wrap around the back of your neck across your shoulders. A bath towel is too big, and a hand towel is probably too small.

Gym towels should be washed after every use, so a durable towel that will hold up over multiple washes is necessary. Gym towels should also be washed with detergent (but avoid softeners) at a very high temperature. A commercial laundry service such as Austin Linen Service will ensure a washing temperature much higher than a residential washing machine and a commercial laundry service will also have equipment that can provide commercial strength to extract water to ensure a very clean towel.

When deciding on a gym, you will want to check and see how towels are handled and stored. If gym towels are stored in an open area that is not good. They should be off the floor in a cabinet or special storage area away from traffic areas and germs. Towles should also not handled by multiple people, the fewer, the better.
