Spa linens differ slightly from the linens used in other industries in that they must look and feel extremely luxurious but must do so while having incredible durability. Any misjudgment in the quality of spa linens detracts from the relaxing experience of the guest, so it’s important to pay attention to both sides of the coin when choosing your spa linens.
Whether towels or sheets, there are two basic areas to pay attention to when looking for and selecting your spa linens.
1. Look and Feel
Aim for the highest quality material you can afford. Lower quality towels and linens that break down easily lose their comfort just as quickly, which makes them unappealing to your guests and clients. They also need to be replaced more often, which is not cost effective.
Pima cotton is extra long staple cotton (ELS), and is a great choice. The longer fibers give it extra strength and thickness and creates a much softer fabric.
Also ensure that your linens are uniform and give off a clean vibe. Colored linens are fine, but do tend to fade faster with all the cleaning cycles. It’s never a mistake to go with white here for this very reason alone. The goal is to provide a fresh, clean, and relaxing environment, so be sure to keep that in mind.
2. Weight and Thickness
Towel weight is typically measured in GSM, or grams per square meter. The higher the GSM, the more durable and dense the material. The softer and thicker your spa towels are, the more comfortable they will be. Premium towels will have a 600 – 900 GSM.
Sheet weight and quality is measured by thread count, which refers to the number of horizontal and vertical threads in a square inch. In general the higher the thread count, the softer and more luxurious the sheet.
The softness of the towels and other linens is also related to how well you take care of them, so ensuring the proper care is essential to the durability and comfort as well.
